As part of our international engagement initiatives, Woodbridge Research promotes and assists with the development of institutional and human resource capabilities, and shares knowledge and research expertise through our education and research collaborations.
Woodbridge Research was honoured to accept an invitation from Vietnam’s Institute of Human Rights, to present to research professionals during a scientific workshop in Hanoi. The workshop offered Woodbridge Research opportunity to share knowledge and research expertise, and current critical thinking surrounding some important social issues facing Viet Nam today. Our presentations explored tailored options for development, and lent support to advocacy toward policy development in Viet Nam.
The workshop theme was “The application of theories in solving practical problems in sociological research”. Our presentations focused on population health, exploring two ‘hot topics’ currently debated in Viet Nam – sexual health and gender equality, and prostitution as sex work.
“Addressing sexual health – the application of gender theories”.
Prepared for the Centre for Women in Politics and Public Administration, this presentation reflected on New Zealand’s history and challenges toward attaining gender equality. We juxtaposited that against a recognition of the huge impact Viet Nam’s women make to modern society, their struggle toward obtaining gender equality, and the role equality plays in promoting the sexual health of women.
“Prostitution as sex work – a New Zealand perspective”.
Prepared for the Institute of Human Rights. This presentation illustrated the huge changes that have occurred in New Zealand’s sex industry over the last 30 years. We highlighted key aspects of sexual and population health to illustrate the known and projected health consequences that sex and prostitution play in Viet Nam’s population health status. We then reflected on the challenges that a move from ‘prostitution’ to ‘sex work’ could have to Viet Nam’s cultural and social values.
The Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Public Administration is a long established and prestigious training institution for Viet Nam’s mid and high ranking leaders. Alongside providing training, the Academy also undertakes research to support public policy.
The many different research professionals at this workshop highlighted the fantastic array of interesting and pertinent research currently being conducted by the faculties and institutions within the Academy.
Woodbridge Research look forward to working closely with the Academy into the future.
